Nicosia, Europe's only divided capital
Nicosia, Europe's only divided capital, bears all the hallmarks of being on a Mediterranean island. Home to a multitude of cultures, languages, and religions, from Byzantine to Arab, Ottoman to British, history oozes from almost every corner of Nicosia. The Selimiye Mosque, for example, is an ancient cathedral, the Bedesten (Covered Mosque) contains archaeological remains, and the Arap Ahmet neighborhood, home to Armu Street, where Armenians sought refuge, is littered with signs of desolation. Ledra Palace, where unification negotiations took place, is riddled with bullet holes. It's not just Nicosia; wherever you go on the island, tourists are stifled; you're quickly drawn into the island's politics. Increased migration from Turkey in recent years has effectively reduced Turkish Cypriots to a minority in the north. While the south of the island relies on the EU, the north, weary of embargoes, struggles to survive economically. Emigration is the only avenue for young people who have lost confidence in politics to find their future. T24 writer Fulya Canşen toured Nicosia, Europe's only divided capital, with Cypriot poet Neşe Yaşın in the 2020s and narrated the story for the T24 Podcast series Tefrika24.
